Why is there anything at all?
I’d like to tell you a story.
It begins at a sushi table, with three sentences written on a tablet.
Let me tell you what happened.
In 2011 I was selling a tablet nobody remembers, in a market that didn’t want it, for a company that was about to stop making it.
One night I was at Joe’s All You Can Eat with a friend named Mason, and the conversation got around to the kind of question you can’t settle over dinner. Somewhere in there I picked up the tablet, wrote three sentences on the screen with my finger, and slid it down the table.
He read them. He agreed with the first one. He agreed with the second one. Then he went quiet, because he could see the bill coming.
THE COMMON GROUND
A place
to begin.
Read them slowly. Push back if you need to.

03Therefore, there has never been nothing.
If this is true, it raises a question. We’re here, right? So what the heck happened?
What — or maybe who — has always existed?
These are some of the conversations that flow from that conclusion.
Why is the world both beautiful and wounded?
What, if anything, gives us reason to hope?

WHAT ABOUT JESUS?
There is a particular person who made extraordinary claims about this question. Is He worth hearing?
Jesus is not a secret plot twist we reveal at the end. He’s the reason we’re asking.
The argument doesn’t prove Jesus. It opens questions about reality, suffering and hope—and I don’t think you can take those questions seriously and leave Him out of them.
Before the institutions, labels and accumulated religious culture, there is Jesus Himself. Who is this man? What did He say and do? What did He see in people? Why should I listen to Him? Could He help me?
You don’t have to agree with Jesus before you encounter Him. Why not listen for a while?
